Sixteen days is long enough to move a habit from "I am trying" to "this is what I do", and short enough to stay motivated. This checklist follows the same daily tasks as the 16-day healthy habits challenge on our site, so you can track it there or on paper.

The idea is simple: start with four basics, add a fifth on day 5 and a sixth on day 9, and keep going until day 16.

The daily checklist

From day 1

  • Eat your meals at regular times. Pick times for breakfast, lunch and dinner and stick close to them.

  • Drink water through the day. Keep a bottle in sight; about 6 to 8 glasses of fluid a day suits most people. Refill it each time you finish it.

  • Morning: 10 to 15 minutes of stretching or a walk.

  • Evening: a 15 to 20 minute walk, ideally after dinner.

Added on day 5

  • Skip packaged snacks and sweet drinks. Replace them with fruit, roasted chana, makhana, buttermilk or water.

Added on day 9

  • Plan tomorrow's meals. Before bed, decide tomorrow's breakfast, lunch and dinner, soak dal if needed and pack the tiffin.

Why these six habits

  • Regular meals reduce extreme hunger and make planning easier. See a consistent meal schedule.

  • Water supports energy and digestion; see our hydration guide.

  • Two short movement sessions add up. Adults should aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate activity a week, and these walks get you close.

  • Fewer packaged snacks and sweet drinks cut a lot of added sugar, salt and fat, and keep free sugars low.

  • Planning tomorrow removes last-minute decisions, which is when takeaway and snacks win.

Week-by-week guide

Days 1 to 4: set the rhythm

Focus on meal times, water and the two walks. Do not worry about what you eat yet; get the routine in place. Set phone reminders if it helps.

Days 5 to 8: clean up the snacks

Clear packaged snacks out of easy reach and stock fruit, roasted chana and makhana. Swap one sweet drink a day for water or chaas. Our homemade snacks can replace namkeen.

Days 9 to 12: plan ahead

Every evening, spend five minutes planning tomorrow's meals. Use a simple structure: protein, vegetables and a moderate grain at lunch and dinner. The balanced thali guide helps.

Days 13 to 16: make it yours

By now the habits should feel more natural. Notice which ones are easy and which still need effort. Adjust times to suit your life rather than dropping the habit.

Tips to keep going

  • Pair habits with existing routines: stretch after brushing your teeth, walk after dinner.

  • Make it social: walk with a family member or friend.

  • Be flexible on bad days: a 5-minute walk is better than none.

  • Do not chase perfection: missing one day does not cancel the others.

After day 16

Keep the habits that stuck. For a gentler start, try the 7-day healthy eating challenge; for a bigger step, try the 30-day lifestyle challenge.

A note on safety

These are general wellness habits for healthy adults. If you have a heart condition, joint problems, diabetes, are pregnant or have not been active for a long time, check with your doctor before increasing activity, and stop if anything hurts. See our medical disclaimer.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the challenge add habits on day 5 and day 9?

Starting with four basics makes the first days manageable. New habits are added once the routine is in place.

Can I walk at a different time of day?

Yes. Choose times that fit your day; what matters is doing the movement regularly.

What counts as a packaged snack?

Chips, namkeen, biscuits, cakes, instant noodles and similar ready-made snacks, and sweetened drinks like soft drinks and packaged juices.
